He is particularly interested in systematic and integrative analysis of pan-genomes of microbial taxa with the information of related metagenomes of microbiomes.

Professor Zhao Guoping is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) (elected in 2005), fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (elected in 2011), and honorary President of the Chinese Society for Microbiology (since 2012). He is Chief Scientist of Institute of Synthetic Biology, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT); Professor and Director of CAS-Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Professor and Director, Shanghai-MOST Key Laboratory for Disease and Health Genomics, Chinese National Human Genome Center at Shanghai (CHGCS); a professor of Department of Microbiology in The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Director of Center for Synthetic Biology in Fudan University.
