Struggle in a new journey
Under the guidance and support of SIAT and SIAT University (tentative name) and with the care and help from all quarters of society, all people of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology remained true to their original aspiration in achieving the leap of life science from understanding of life to designing of life, with a vision to understand and create life, integrate BT and IT and build a world’s first-class institute of synthetic biology. On January 12, 2023, Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology held a conclusion and commendation conference, drawing a successful end to the year of 2022 and usher in 2023 with a new horizon.
Splendid moments of the conference
The year 2022 marked a crucial year for the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan and an important year for China to advance towards the second centenary goal. Guided by the spirit of the 20th Congress of the CPC, the Institute thoroughly implemented Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era under the goal of major strategic output and key core technologies, advancing towards the peak of science and technology and boosting the industrial development with reforms.

Looking back at 2022, Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology has made remarkable achievements. Thanks to the concerted efforts of all the staff and students of Shenzhen Synthetic Biology Institute of SIAT and the School of Synthetic Biology of SIAT University involved in the construction of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, a batch of excellent research management staff have emerged in Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology in the course of struggle.
In the commendation ceremony, a total of 69 people were commended with various awards and titles such as the Special Award of the President, the Excellent PI Award, the Science and Education Integration Award, the Excellent Management Award, the Scientific Research Pioneer Award, the Facilities Contribution Award, the Dedicated Craftsmanship Award, the Best Support Award, the Outstanding Student Award, the Popular Science Contribution Award and the Work Safety Model, and three teams were commended. The meeting called on all staff and employees to take the outstanding employees, advanced individuals and teams as their model, learn from their spirit of devotion, innovation, earnestness and dedication, and make new and greater contributions to the development of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology in the new year.

Zhang Xian’en, president of the School of Synthetic Biology, concluded that the School of Synthetic Biology had made a lot of achievements this year and also achieved a certain success in the integrated development of science and education, which was closely related with the innovative culture, cooperation, dedication and enterprising spirit of the Institute. The song “Light of Life” released on the fifth anniversary of the Institute reflected the high spirit of the students and their patriotism in devoting themselves to the development of science and technology of the country. They were full of enthusiasm and hope. President Zhang Xian’en congratulated the individuals and teams for winning the awards and honors and hoped that the Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology and the School of Synthetic Biology could develop better and better in the new year and make due contributions to promoting the high self-reliance and self-improvement of China in science and technology.

Liu Chenli, president of Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, recognized the work done by each center and department and all staff and students of the Institute in the past year, and pointed out that the Institute should fully unleash its strength in national strategic technology, aim at the world’s cutting-edge technology, serve the main battlefield of economy, major demands and the people’s life and health around the national development strategy and the four requirements. He hoped that all staff of the Institute could make concerted efforts to seek development and overcome all difficulties and start a new journey in the new era under the goal of building a world’s first-class research institution.
